Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Pillar Underfunded as Liberia fight COVID-19.

CSOs in Liberia recently engaged the Government of Liberia through the WASH Pillar to provide updates on progress and challenges toward the fight against COVID-19. The meeting which was organized by the United Youth for Peace, Education, Transparency and Develoopment in Liberia (UYPETDL) Inc. with support from WaterAid took place on July 15, 2020 and was attended by Lawmakers, CSOs, partners and WASH Pillar members. The meeting is part of CSOs advocacy aims at increased financing, better targeting, adequate response and accountability by implementing agencies. It’s also intended to ensure performance monitoring of implementation of COVID 19 response plan and utilization of funds to support accountability. During the meeting, the WASH Pillar Chairman, Hon. Bobby Whitefield informed CSOs and Lawmakers that the WASH Pillar is underfunded. According to him, the Pillar submitted a budget of US$ 6 million to the Incident Management Team, of this amount, only US$ 40,375.24 was transferred to the WASH Pillar from the National Government while donors and partners have contributed over US$ 348,763.20. With this disappointing report, CSOs is strongly demanding national government to prioritize the WASH sector in the fight against COVID-19 through financial contribution and needed political will. CSOs currently engaging the National Legislature to ensure increased budgetary support to WASH through the National Budget.
