  • Major or Current Achievements *: GFD was established in 1987 as a national cross-disability umbrella organization of organizations of persons with disabilities. GFD’s membership has risen from the initial three to seven, comprising: Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), Ghana Blind Union (GBU), Inclusion Ghana, - dealing with Children with Intellectual Disability (IG), Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism (GAPA), Share Care – a group of people with neuro-immunological diseases and with autoimmune conditions and Mental Health Society of Ghana (MEHSOG). GFD’s mission has been to advocate the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and their effective participation in society at all levels, through advocacy, lobbying, sensitization and education of the general public about the capacities and capabilities of persons with disabilities, and ensuring the equalization of opportunities among PWDs. GFD has regional and district branches/committees in all the 10 regions and about 170 districts. GFD was instrumental in advocating the passage of Ghana's Disability Act 715 , The ratification of the UNCRPD, and other social protection policies and programs for persons with disabilities such as the 3% disability common fund, among others.
